The Tug Test
Have you ever casually placed your hand on the nape of your neck and realized your pendant was missing? An immediate sense of shock pervades your body at the thought of this prized possession being lost. Regardless of where you are or what you’re doing, most people drop everything and go into search mode. This recently happened to one of my loved ones, and the emotional fallout was palpable and taxing.
When situations like this arise, it is important to stay calm. You will most likely find it, as was the case here (but notwithstanding what seemed like an anxious hour-long search). If you aren’t so fortunate, the main lesson to be learned with jewelry neckwear is the Tug Test.
Implement the tug test every time you wear a necklace. As the name suggests, after you place it on your neck, give your necklace a light “tug.” This will insure that the hook and hoop on either side of the string have securely locked into place. It will also allow you to uncover any weak links, if you are wearing a chain. I wouldn’t recommend the test with a string of pearls around your neck, as the aftermath could be messy!
Get into the habit of applying the test every time you put your jewelry on. For those that go to bed with your jewelry, take the time to remove it before you go to sleep. This will help you easily keep track of your items. I know countless people who wake up to find earrings or necklaces missing and it’s not a great way to start your day. While the tug test seems like a relatively simple task, it will protect you from future mishaps, and ultimately save you a lot of time and aggravation. Stay calm & tug on!
