The Beginning
My grandfather, Selim, was a diamond cutter and trader in the 1950s. The story goes that an old Jewish neighbor, who was also a diamond cutter, never had a son. He noticed a very young Selim joyously playing with stones, identifying their shapes and colors. The man asked my great-grandfather if he could teach Selim to cut diamonds, and that's how Selim's apprenticeship began. As a young man, he traveled to South America and Africa, eventually settling in Monrovia, the capital of the African nation of Liberia. There, his career in rough diamond trading took off. It was so successful that he moved his wife and started their family, having my mother and uncles in the tropical paradise/nation.
Our History
The Journey
from
Mine to Finger
My father, Jacques, began his apprenticeship and career in Liberia in the 1960s, where he became a competitor of Selim’s. In the Middle East, having Initially aspired to be a commercial pilot, his plans changed when a friend convinced him to "temporarily" visit Africa. What was supposed to be a few-week work trial turned into a decade-long stay, leading him into the rough trading profession. In the 1970s, Jacques moved his family to New York and became one of the world’s foremost rough diamond dealers. He traveled to South America and throughout Africa to acquire some of the most important diamonds of his generation. Additionally, he is credited with being the first independent junior diamond miner in Africa and the world after relocating our family to South Africa to continue the generational adventure with diamonds.
